Statistical model based on expected goals (xG), results and match statistics from the last two seasons. For information only. How our model works →

The last time these sides met, Borussia Dortmund came out on top 3-2 in a seven-goal Bundesliga thriller in May. This Saturday at Signal Iduna Park, the stakes feel higher and the picture is very different: Dortmund sit second, while Frankfurt are 11th.

Dortmund’s chase of the summit

Dortmund have 14 points from six matches, a strong start that keeps them firmly in the title conversation. A home win would keep them within touching distance of the leaders and send a clear message this early in the season. For Frankfurt, the aim is more basic. Eight points and a goal difference of minus six leave them in the lower half, and a trip to the Ruhr offers little room for error.

Two very different runs

Dortmund have not lost a league game this season. Their four wins and two draws have come with a sequence of WWWWDD, and they have scored nine times in their last five matches while conceding only four. At home they have been especially productive, averaging 2.3 goals per game.

Frankfurt have been far less settled. Their six games have produced two wins, two draws and two defeats, and in their last five matches they have conceded 13 times. Their away form has been the most concerning part: 16 goals conceded in six games, including 10 on the road.

Five meetings, few easy afternoons

Dortmund have won two of the last five meetings, Frankfurt have taken one, and two have ended level. Frankfurt’s 2-0 win in January 2025 and Dortmund’s 2-0 win in August 2024 show how tight the fixture can be, while the 3-3 draw in January and the 3-2 result in May suggest goals are rarely in short supply.

Absences on both sides

Dortmund will be without E. Can (knee), K. Karetsas (ankle) and G. Konstantelias (knee), and J. Lerma is a doubt with a muscle problem. Frankfurt face uncertainty over N. Collins (foot), O. Hojlund (thigh), J. Ngankam (hamstring) and M. Pimpong, all listed as doubtful.

Our prediction

PreviaXI’s model favours Dortmund, and the reasoning is easy to follow. Dortmund create more chances, have the stronger home record, and have kept their defence tight, while Frankfurt have struggled to contain opponents away from home. We expect Dortmund to control the game and take the points, with Frankfurt’s depleted and uncertain selection making it difficult to get a foothold.
