Manchester United's injury crisis hangs over Elland Road clash

Manchester United travel to Leeds on Sunday needing points, with a thinned squad that leaves little room for error. Leeds are missing two key players but still have the edge in their recent league meetings.

Manchester United arrive at Elland Road needing points they can ill afford to drop, and an injury list that has thinned their options just as the pressure builds.

Stakes at Elland Road

Leeds sit eighth on nine points, three ahead of a United side who are 14th in a 20-team table with a goal difference of zero. Neither side can afford to drift further from the top half this early in the season, and for United the timing could hardly be worse.

Two sides trading goals and draws

Leeds have had a mixed run, with one defeat, one win and three draws across their last five league matches. They have scored seven and conceded five in that spell. United have been just as unsettled, collecting three draws, a defeat and a win, but their attack has been more productive, with nine goals scored and seven conceded.

Recent meetings lean towards tight margins

The last two Premier League meetings have been close. Leeds beat United 2-1 at Old Trafford in April, and the reverse fixture in January ended 1-1. Both sides have shared plenty of tight results in this fixture, and there is little in the recent history to suggest a comfortable afternoon for either.

United’s injury list reshapes their options

United are without Dorgu, Heaton, Sesko and Ugarte, and face late fitness doubts over Mainoo, Mazraoui and Shaw. Losing Sesko and Ugarte removes both a central goal threat and a midfield anchor, forcing Ruben Amorim to reshuffle at the moment he needs stability most. Leeds have problems of their own, with Joseph and Rodon ruled out and James a doubt, but United’s list is the longer and more damaging of the two.

Our prediction

We expect a tense contest in which United’s thinned squad struggles to control the middle of the pitch, while Leeds take advantage of their numerical gaps at home. United’s attack has the quality to find a goal, but their backline will be stretched. Leeds 1-2 Manchester United.
