A slide that has put Corinthians under the spotlight

Corinthians have lost five successive league games, and that run has left them 16th in a 20-team table with 32 points from 30 matches. Pressure is building at Neo Quimica Arena, and a home match against a side ranked above them leaves little room for another stumble.

Goals drying up at both ends

The recent numbers tell the story. Corinthians have scored five times in their last five matches, an average of one per game, while conceding 13, or 2.6 a match. Across the season they have scored 31 goals and conceded 38, a goal difference of minus seven. Their six clean sheets at home show the defence can still hold firm, but the recent collapse is hard to ignore.

Vitoria arrive with a more balanced recent record. They have scored nine goals in their last five, and their results read LWLDW. They are 13th on 36 points, and they have been strong on their own ground, winning 10 of 15 home matches. Away from home, however, they have yet to win in 15 attempts, with five draws and 10 defeats.

Recent meetings favour Corinthians

The head-to-head record leans toward the home side. Corinthians have won three of the last five meetings and drawn the other two, while Vitoria have not won any. The most recent encounter, in April, ended goalless at Vitoria’s ground.

Injury problems on both sides

Corinthians will be without Depay, who misses the match after picking up yellow cards, and without Kayke and Z. Labyad, both sidelined by knee injuries.

Vitoria face a far longer list of absentees. Baralhas and Camutanga are out with broken legs, Edu is sidelined by an Achilles tendon injury, and Dudu has a back problem. Fabiano and Nathan Mendes are both missing with knee injuries, Ramon has a leg injury, and Riccieli is out with a calf problem. Caca is also suspended after yellow cards, and Lucas Silva is a doubt through injury.

Our prediction

Corinthians have the home advantage and the greater need for a result, but their attack has struggled to find the net and their defence has been leaking goals. Vitoria have shown they can score on the road and have a useful home record, yet their travelling form is poor and their injury list is long. A cagey match with chances at both ends feels most likely, and a share of the points seems a fair reflection of two sides in form slumps.
